Ginza

Ginza is our favorite Japanese restaurant in Houston.

It isn't one of the trendy, flashy, high-priced sushi restaurants in town, but that's exactly why we prefer it.  It may not have a singles night or dance music, but it does have great ambiance, with traditional-style decorations, and good service, and it's comfortable.  Most importantly, the sushi is extremely good!

The restaurant is fairly small, and the first impression may not be great, as their entry-way is a bit in disarray, but it is more welcoming as you enter the main dining room.  There are two or three tatami rooms for private parties, which is very nice, and two main dining areas.  They have a bar if you want to sit there and watch the sushi being made; the rest of the restaurant is filled with tables (no booths).

Their menu is large, with a huge selection of appetizers, though much of it is in Japanese or is otherwise unidentifiable to someone like me :)

The sushi is very fresh and tasty; if you've only had sushi at a chain restaurant or buffet, you don't know what you're missing.  Their Mt. Fuji is especially good.  They also have fairly large pieces compared to some other restaurants.

I also love the "clear soup" with spinach and fish in a clear broth.  Oh, and their plum wine is really yummy.

The waitresses are always attentive and polite, and dressed in traditional style.  One of our favorite touches is that they bring you steaming hot scented hand towels the moment you sit down.  Karen always seems to be there, and she will remember and welcome you back every time.
